I am always excited to discover new musicians who aren't afraid to step outside traditional genre boundaries. If you're seeking a good vibe and some fun, then Kemmii's EP "BQFRMBK (Butch Queen from Brooklyn)" is perfect for you. When I noticed I didn't skip a single track, I thought, "Yeah, okay" (Kemmii voice).

A glimpse into the identity of this rising R&B Singer/Pop Star: Kemmii is a singer/songwriter, choreographer, and producer hailing from Brooklyn, NY. The queer Caribbean-American artist has been immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of New York City, gaining a sense of confidence in the big city as he grew into the musical artist he is today. Kemmii states, "This project reflects who I am as an individual and where I come from. I've blended the sounds and rhythms I grew up with into a modern style and perspective." His music feels like early 2000s pop merging with a new era of R&B. There truly is no genre that can define him. This rising star collaborates with Jus10 and Derrick Lumiere.

The term "Butch Queen" originates from the language of ballroom culture and refers to a gay man who does not adhere to societal norms. This individual embodies a balanced mix of both masculine and feminine energy and presentation. The term has its roots in New York City. It is widely recognized that Beyoncé's "Renaissance" album and tour drew inspiration from and honored Black, queer, and ballroom culture.

WAKE UP This is the opening track on the album and it's my favorite. I appreciate when artists express gratitude before embarking on something new. The lyrics resonate with motivation, especially when it feels like the world is against you. I truly needed to hear this song after all I've been going through recently... Thank you, Kemmii. At the start of this project, the singer highlights, "Find the courage to stay, God will surely make a way." EVERYDAY The R&B rhythm on this track will mesmerize you, making you slide down a wall. It's like a love letter dedicated to your partner's body. Be sure to play this before heading out for the night or on your way home. Listening to "Everyday" brings a subtle hint of early 2000s R&B. BQFRMBK The title track holds great significance for the singer's audience, serving as a message about the essence of this musical project. "BQFRMBK" exudes New York vibes, pride, and a slow rhythm to slow whine to. Kemmii proudly represents his city while introducing the Butch Queen from Brooklyn. It's giving superstar, luxurious, and "I got next" energy. The final 29 seconds captivate me with a distinctive whisper that almost feels like it could be from a Drake album. This track demonstrates that Kemmii isn't confined to a single genre; I can envision him on pop, R&B, Caribbean, or hip-hop tracks.

HEAT (FEAT. EHRIE) Both "HEAT" and "EVERYDAY" were previously released as singles, so Kemmii's fans are already acquainted with this dance track. The songwriter manages to incorporate his Caribbean heritage, expressing a desire to "just whine on you to this beat boy." The song is expertly produced, with whispers and harmonies perfectly synchronized, making every second of this 2:29 track sparkle in my AirPods.

AFTERPARTY IN THE DELI

Another favorite track of mine, I definitely want to hear this at the end of a night out. "AFTERPARTY IN THE DELI" samples Khia's "My Neck, My Back" and "Ladies Booty Bounce to This." It's a song perfect for winding your waist with friends as the party wraps up. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this and am eager to hear Kemmii's upcoming projects. Music Grade: A
